Strategies for Helping

Assist the patient manage his pain of the moment by helping him find the root of the pain: From what level does it originate? Once this is known, the most effective approach to bringing relief can be employed.

Here are some things you can do to help the dying deal with their pain:

• Show that you care in any number of ways, including by asking, “How may I help you?”

• Alleviate the fear of the unknown by explaining or having a physician or other caregiver explain what is likely to happen from here on.

• Let them know that they still have a say in what will happen in terms of care and treatment.

• Express that you are trying to appreciate what they are going through.

• Help them mend fences if necessary. Make calls to estranged relatives or friends; act as an intermediary.

• Reinsure them that their loved ones will be okay without them. Use specifics.

• Let them know that they will be remembered and missed.

• Emphasize the positive experiences and accomplishments in the person’s life. De-emphasize the “what ifs” and the “if onlys.”

• Encourage others to visit or call, especially those close to the person. Visits or cards from children are especially helpful.

• Assure them that they are not going to be abandoned, that someone will be available 24/7.

• Help with the writing of letters to say unsaid things to loved ones.

• Share beliefs.

• Bring in a pastoral care professional, such as their own minister.
